Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

  • Worsted weight alpaca yarn (Color of your choice)
  • Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn weight (usually around 4.5mm or size G/7)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Finished Size: Approximately 4 inches (10 cm) in length, suitable for newborn to 6-month-old babies.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in single crochet

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Instructions:

Mitten (Make 2): Cuff:

  1. Chain 11.
  2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 10 sc stitches. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
  3. Work 10 rows of sc. Ch 1, turn.

Hand:

  1. Work 1 hdc in the first 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next 6 stitches, and 1 hdc in the last 2 stitches. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
  2. Work 1 hdc in the first 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next 6 stitches, and 1 hdc in the last 2 stitches. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 3 inches from the cuff edge.

Thumb Opening:

  1. Ch 2, skip the first stitch, and hdc in the next 4 stitches. Ch 2, skip the next 2 stitches, hdc in the last 4 stitches. Ch 1, turn. (8 sts)
  2. Hdc in each stitch and chain across. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Repeat Row 2 once more. Fasten off.

Thumb:

  1. Join yarn at the thumb opening.
  2. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the thumb opening. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly:

  1. Fold the mitten in half, right sides together.
  2. With a yarn needle, sew the sides of the mitten together using a whipstitch or preferred seaming method. Start at the cuff and sew down to the thumb opening.
  3. Weave in any remaining ends.

Finishing: Repeat all the above steps to make the second mitten.
